In Recognition of James “Jimmy” Matarazzo
Today we honor the life of James Matarazzo—a man whose passion, friendship, and leadership cast a long, bright line across the waters he loved so deeply. Jimmy was more than an angler and more than a steward of the outdoors; he was a force of hope, renewal, and connection.
No place reflected his spirit more clearly than the Veazie Salmon Club. At a time when the club faced uncertainty, Jimmy stepped forward with determination and an unwavering belief that its legacy was worth fighting for. He helped guiding of the club through change, rebuilding its foundation, and rekindling its sense of purpose. His work wasn’t simply administrative or organizational—it was personal. Jimmy understood that the Veazie Salmon Club wasn’t only about fishing; it was about community, heritage, family & friends, and the love of a river that binds people together.
Jimmy’s love for Atlantic salmon fishing was profound and lifelong. He saw salmon not just as a species to catch, but as a symbol of resilience and grace. Many got to fish with Jimmy who was someone completely at home—equal parts teacher, storyteller, and eternal optimist. Even when salmon runs were uncertain, Jimmy carried a belief as steady as the current: that one day, the lines would tighten again and the old bell would ring with joy. That hope lifted all of us.
Beyond his work and passions, Jimmy was above all a great friend and an exceptional leader. He led not by command, but by encouragement… not with ego, but with empathy. People followed him because he made them feel valued, capable, and welcome. His laughter warmed the clubhouse; his wisdom steadied tough conversations; his generosity shaped countless lives. To know Jimmy was to feel seen, supported, and inspired. Today we grieve his loss, but we also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind—one defined by perseverance, love of the outdoors, and the friendships he forged like strong knots that never slip. The Veazie Salmon Club stands stronger because of him.
May we honor Jimmy by continuing his work, cherishing one another as he did, and holding tight to the hope he always carried—that the river will rise, the salmon will return, and the bell will ring out again.
Tight lines, Jimmy. You will be deeply missed, and always remembered.
